Peak Of Racial Discrimination

Emmett Louis Till and his mom Mamie Till Bradley

There was a day in the history America, when the peak of racial discrimination took place. That was the period, when African Americans were under attack, that no African-American male in the South was safe. A fourteen year old boy Emmett Louis Till lived in Chicago with his mother Mamie Till Bradley, a teacher. Emmett and his cousin planned a trip to Mississippi to visit their relatives. Before leaving Chicago, his mother clearly advised him about how to interact with white people. Till's mother understood that race relations in Mississippi were very different from those in Chicago. Emmett arrived in Mississippi on Sunday, August 21st.

On Wednesday, Emmett and his five cousins went into town, Money, Mississippi, for picking cotton for his uncle. They visited Bryant’s Grocery store to buy some candy. The store was owned by a white husband and wife, Roy Bryant and Carolyn Bryant. Emmett friends challenged to flirt with Carolyn. It seems Emmett says “Bye baby” to Carolyn when he left the store. This news spread quickly around the store. Roy heard this story when he returned from work. He was very angry with Emmett.

Brutally killed Emmett

On August 28, Roy Bryant and his half brother, J.W. Milam, began looking for Emmett Till. They found him at his uncle's cabin. Entering the cabin with flashlights and Colt 45 pistols, they kidnapped Emmett. To teach him lesson, they drove him to a weathered shed on a plantation in neighboring Sunflower County, where they beat and then shot him. Three days later, Emmett’s corpse was pulled from the depths of the Tallahatchie River. It was weighted down by a seventy-five pound cotton gin fan, which was tied around Till’s neck with barbed wire, his right eye hanging midway to his cheek, his nose flattened, and a bullet hole through his head.

How a mother would feel the pain of her son’s death. It’s unexplainable pain. She made the decision to have an open casket funeral. She wanted the world to know what had happened to her son. Fifty-thousand people attended the funeral of Emmett Till. Milam and Bryant were never charged for Emmett’s death.

I was born 25 years later but I went through my childhood here meeting and greeting these folks in every day life. I knew some of the defense attourneys as well as most of the biggoted bastards that sat on the jury. For some reason i looked all of this up today just to .....i dont know. Turns my stomach thats for sure. They all seemed so normal and now just look like monsters in my eyes.

  7. I am 51 years old, lived in Georgia with my grandparents as a child. This henious act of violence and hate is beyond comprehension. I am still moved by this. Let us not forget the young Till Emmett and that his death was not in vain. Till Emmett`s name should be the symbol of justice and equality for all. Let us not forget the Racial Hatred and Discrimination that exit in The United States of America to this day, that this is a part of our past and part of our present. In my opinion The United States of America is one of the most racist country if not the most racist country in the western world.

  9. What is wrong with those men? They killed this young boy with a life ahead of him with such brutality that he wasn't even recognizable as to being a human, yet there they are celebrating while smoking cigars!! They have no remorse and that just shows how inhumane they are. I'm 12 years old and I read a book called Mississippi Trials and it's about this historic event. When I read it I couldn't believe these monsters got away with it! I hope that when they lived they had a spark of humanity to realize what they did so they could die with the guilt and identical pain to Emmett Till's. This was a horrible price to pay, yet this started the civil rights movement and helped me and others to have the rights we so desperately needed. Let Emmett Louis Till rest in heavenly peace.

  12. ur right. he should've kept his mouth shut. but everybody has a chance to live. its just the time's they lived in that made that different. not every kid was an outstanding kid who only talks when spoken to. to me he seems like a innocent kid who didnt deserve this kind of punishment. im just glad its not this bad anymore. 14. Roy Bryant, Carolyn Bryant, J.W. Milam, and Juanita Milam are burning in HELL..over and over and over again. I curse their entire family. Any kids, grandkids, great grandkids and so on, will ALL die horrible, prolonged, painful deaths. I HOPE the DEVIL kills them and brings them back to life over and over again for eternity. The devil will make them his bitches. ROT IN HELL YOU IGNORANT WHITE SON OF A BITCHES!

  15. If I could go back in time for just one fucking day I would beat the living hell out of these racist sons of bitches!!!!!! This was a 14 year old child, it doesn't matter if he knew better or not...him whistling at a white women still doesn't give reason for him to be brutally beaten and killed the way he was killed. He died a horrible death, I can only imagine the pain he must have endured before they finally decided to put a bullet to his head!! This really angers me and I am also angry at his uncle for not trying to do anything about it. I understand that blacks didn't have many rights at all back then but somehow we would have pulled together and put up more of a fight. Had it been my child...they would have had to take me as well because there is no way in hell that I would just let someone come into my home and take my child knowing what they where going to do to him!! I thank God that I didn't grow up in that day and time. These rotton bastards may have gotton away with this on earth but you best believe that their asses are roasting over and over again in hell. I bet they aren't smoking any fucking cigars and laughing now cause their assholes are on fire! HA HA...who's laughing now!!

  18. This post isn't very detailed but nonetheless it explains Emmettt Louis Till's brutal murder.

Both men never showed remorse but they lost their businesses after the trial and their wives divorced them soon after. Milam died in 1980 and Bryant in 1994, both due to cancer.

I hope they suffered more than Emmett did that one August morning. I just hope where ever Emmett is, he is in a better place.

  22. Those men died before they could be tortured. Yes, it is a horrible story...Also the story of Medgar Evers is very sad. It was no where near as horrific but the thought of it being true and the fact that our world used to be like that, and in some places still is. I'm white and the thought of this almost makes me feel ashamed.

  23. anybody who thought those men were right for what they done will get what they deserve if not here on earth but somewhere else for eternity... he did nothing wrong and to look at the photos and the way they totally demolished his face brings tears to my eyes...and they got away with it.. thats not right they were supposed to go to jail they were supposed to die in jail...

  24. Can you say Evil....sadly, I say it without a second thought...if I stay in that mind-set..anger builds and I feel a little taste of what evil... and want to go about seeking some justice for this young man, who died senselessly..but to allow my mind to go there will lead to a sickness that they had. Thank-fully theRE is a God, that passes judgement, and quite frankly that can't escape that!
To those jury that found those two evil swines innocent, your just as guilty..and may you get the same reality, that God hands out.

  25. Those men were not humans they were monsters, how did they let them free? without being charged? I really hope they went to hell were they deserve to be at. No human being would do that to a 14 yr. old only monsters!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Some humans are so evil. I feel sorry for the men because their punishment will be much greater in eternity since they were never brought to justice on earth. It is a terrifying thing to fall in the hands of an angry God.

  44. The black people suffered during centuries due to white people. I'm white and I'm living with a black woman. I'm ashamed when I read that white people killed black men like this. Even the animals do not do such a thing. They are worth as shit.
I know now the black community, they are peaceful but they still suffer from discrimination. But pay attention, things are changing and they will finaly prevail.

  45. The comments on this page make me sick. This kid did not deserve this. Even Governor Coleman (a segregationist) stated at that time that "J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant should have been convicted and executed". I'm from Mississippi and there is no way Roy Bryant would have taken up this kind of action by himself, he was a racial coward that looked up to his beastly older brother for actions.Secondy just like cowards these two men had the nerve to worry through the years about them and their family being murdered so much so they went into hiding. What cowards
